Ohio veteran's Civil War Medal recovered in Indiana

Some of you may have seen this on Today's Finds. I found it Saturday evening and have been amazed at how much information there is available about the soldier, his Company, and their battles.
This is probably the best thing I have ever found and it truly crosses the line between people who think treasure hunters are crazy and my fellow diggers. Everybody appreciates this one. I went back to the grove where I dug it today and marked the spot. When the ground dries up a little I am going to redig the hold just to see if the hanger for the award might be there. I doubt if it is, but in my excitement the other night I didn't recheck the hole or dirt. Once I saw a name, connected to the Civil War, I filled the hole and ran for home. The medal was made by Tifanny & Company and I have no idea what it is made from. If anyone has an idea, it would be great to hear from you. This soldier belonged to Ohio's 78. I will update if I find the missing hanger.

Re: Ohio veteran's Civil War Medal recovered in Indiana

Wow! Very cool! it is so rare to find a relic you can attribute to a specific person!

I found Jas T. Bay in the 78th Ohio infantry. He was a musician. The medal looks like Jas F. Bay. :icon_scratch: Typo? Or maybe the engraver couldn't read the initial on the muster record. It happened back then.

I have personal genealogy experience with poorly translated census records. My G-G-G-G grandmother's name was translated from 1850 census records as SEWELL when it actually was LEVALL. I've seen the original record. It really looks like an S at the beginning. So I can see confusing T and F from hand written records.

You might consider posting your find on the Bay family genealogy forum at Ancestry.com.

Congrats again on an outstanding find!
