I found abutton two years ago in the front lawn of a prominent historic house in Cadiz, KY. The home site is located on the highest piece of ground in the town. In relation to the location where I dug the Confederate General Service Button on Monday (see http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,376091.0.html), it is about 1 mile southeast, almost an equal distance on the opposite side of the courthouse (which was the focus of our local CW action). Indeed, it was located on the opposite approach to the courthouse from the direction of Hopkinsville.

The button has on it the state seal of Ohio. Here are a couple of pictures ...

I posted it on another forum at the time, and I was very early in my detecting "career." Some on that forum surmised that it was not CW era because the back was corroded in rust. (No picture ... but the entire back is rusty, with rust overgrowing the actual shank.) Obviously, I cannot make out a back mark.

Yet, clearly, my recent CSA button find, with what appears to be a tin back, gives me hope that this, too, is a CW era button from a Union drop.

I believe my hypothesis may be supported by the fact that I found this little jewel in the same yard ...

Some other folk on another forum helped me identify the slug as 36 cal. Colt revolver pistol bullet. I'm not sure if that's right or not ... maybe someone here will know.

Anyhow ... here's a picture of the bullet, the Ohio uniform button, and a flat button that I found that same day.

Any thoughts on the button and/or bullet ID?

I think this is your bullet. With the size of yours to the ruler.

These are listed as Civil War (M.C. Lilley & Co.):

This is listed as Civil War (Scovill Mf'g Co.):

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/civil-war-ohio-state-seal-scovill-mfg-76081435 (not the same as yours)

This is listed as post Civil War ("Indian Wars c.1870's-1890's and is listed in Albert's as OH3 M.C. Lilley & Co."):

http://cgi.ebay.com/OH3-post-Civil-...751?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5197234bc7 (not sure what Indian Wars they are referring to...did they get the century wrong?)

This lists the same button as Indian Wars and Civil War:

http://www.ssfirearms.com/images/07 Cat/SS07131-146.pdf

buttons 2,3 ~ MB302 CIVIL WAR OHIO. Large (*OH-5)
MB303 CIVIL WAR OHIO. Small (*OH-5)

buttons 34,35 ~ MB334 INDIAN WAR OHIO. Large (*OH-5)
MB335 INDIAN WAR OHIO. Small (*OH-5)

Other than one looks a bit offset, I can't really see the difference between the two. Since you've found other Civil War era items at/near the same site, I'd guess it's a Civil War M.C. Lilley & Co. button.
