I wish I could go back in time to 1991. I was doing renovations on a very old house in Lake Forest, Il. We were tearing down a garage that had been added to it many, many years before. When the Bobcat was stripping out the concrete floor, a hole (3' dia) all of a sudden emerged from nowhere. I almost fell into it in fact. After the dust settled, I stuck my head into it and saw what apeared to be a well. It was about 8' deep and lined with red bricks. There was about 3' of water in it. Funniest thing though, is that a bottle was still floating it it after all these years. I got the bottle out for a coworker who collected them, but that was it.
I really, really wanted to pump out the water and dig a little, but that would have impeeded the days progress. My boss had a load of pea gravel delivered and it was filled in and eventually paved over.
Such a shame, God himself only knows what may have been droped into that well durring its functioning years. If I could do it over again, I'm sure I could have pursuaded the boss to let me have a go at it.
