Sorry... I'm going to reply and not wait for PBK... he'll come along and correct me on something I'm sure! :D

Enlisted Collar Insignia
Complaints in 1907 about the loss or snagging of officer cut-out collar insignia led to the adoption of bronze circular disks for enlisted personnel. Die struck with the branch, US and unit designation, the collar ornaments changed to gilt after 1924.

Cryptodave is correct! U.S. Great Seal Button (Your's looks like collar brass as well)
With the adoption of the Great Seal in 1783, Army buttons begin to reflect it. By 1854 all enlisted personnel wore -- and after 1902 all personnel had -- the Great Seal button, except engineer officers, who retained their distinctive branch button.

Eagle and Anchor button... US Marines... looks like some late 1800s versions, but I cannot verify the year with out better pics from you... see this link: http://www.thetreasuredepot.com/cayenna/index.html

US Army Saint Christopher medalian... the good Saint Christopher carrying the boy accross the river.... thats what it looks like anyway - with the Army name added. Check this out: http://www.jewelbasket.com/jbuur41580.html and [link removed at request of site owner]

Unmarked brass star/badge?

Thanks for the info MJ and Cd. Ya'll are as quick as PBK. I will post a better pix of the marine button. I was like EDDEKALB, I just recognized the quarter :D. I too missed the ruby and I took the pix 8). What about that sheriff badge looking thing? It cleaned up really well. I left it at my girlfriends' and she soaked it in brasso. I found it at an old house site at the edge of a pasture. The house had been torn down. Looks to me like an ornament off a saddle. Of course what do I know. I just recognized the quarter and completely missed the ruby ;D

There's actually two challenges on the 'What Is It" forum - first to ID what it is and second to get up earlier than PBK ;D

I don't get up earlier than PBK... I stay up later!

Fleeker - Yes, I have no idea what the back looks like, but you may be correct on the badge deal - a concho.

See this site for examples! http://www.sbearstradingpost.com/conchos.html#star

Hey MJ here is the back of the star and a few more pix of the button. Sorry about the quality of the pix, but I am using an older 1 megapixel HP Photosmart C200. I have a newer Canon on order. Maybe I can do better! On the back of the button it says JORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA. The front looks like angel wings, a serpent and an anchor.

Back Marks for Horstmann...

W. H. HORSTMANN / PHILA. 1820-1850
W. H. HORSTMANN / NEW YORK 1820-1837
W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS 1843-1863
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / PHILA. 1864-1866
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / NEW YORK 1837-1847
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / PHILA 1859-1863
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / NEW YORK 1850-1852
HORSTMANN BROS & ALLIEN 1852-1877
HORSTMANN BROS & DRUCKER 1844-1850
HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA 1893-1935

Now you have the possible dates!

Hard to tell with the star/concho thing, but does it look like those spots could have held tacks or tabs? If so - it's a concho for leather or cloth... in my opinion.
