People...

Somebody please tell me if rhodium is actually in catalytic converters? And, is it recoverable?

Was doing some more research on gold in computers and ran across this. Have no idea how accurate the info was.

Treasure diver was telling me about the platinum in catalyitc converters, but if there is rhodium....look at what it is selling for!

Yes, they have Platinum, Rhodium and/or Palladium in them. It's a base metal coated with the PGM's, so there may not be much there. Worth some research though. :icon_sunny:

rhodium is used as an ALLOYING AGENT only..... it is used to harden platinum and palladium.... there is isnt enough to bother with investing in the equipment

I recover rhodium plating of jewelry all the time, I have a mason jar of paper filters with bits of rhodium filled to the brim...still not enough to send it as its probably not even a gram if that.
Accumulating Rhodium...even when its on a daily basis, will take years to amount to a salable amount.
Its one of those metals best left to the bigger players and labs. I dont try to bother with it.

Yes, there is some Rhodium in most catalytic converters (I think maybe diesel and very old catalytic converters might be different). I've read that there are some converters with exceptional amounts of rhodium. Don't know which ones. Your average one probably would only have a small fraction of a gram of Rhodium in it though - maybe a tenth to a fifth of a gram or so.

There are many exotic metals around like depleted uranium in arab sands on past battlefields or tantalum in most electrolytic capacitors, rhodium in Cats etc.
Whats the point of us down to earth scrappers dreaming / researching this.
It's a bit like going on about the price of copper when the real money is in readily available steel

Many of the companies that recycle them do isolate the Rhodium. But the scale of the operation it fairly large.
