officers' badge ?

hi all,
my old th buddy found this a few years ago. he thinks it's a french officers' badge. it's 2.5" x7/8". rather intricate work i'd say.

My initial reaction is disagree... It looks like a brooch, or a hair pin, or maybe a sash buckle... but I really don't think an official badge.

It is a pretty item though!

What does the back look like?

Agreed, don't think its military. Late Victorian?

The crescent shapes over the fleur de leis lead me away from thinking its of French origin. Could be wrong tho. Moroccan influence

Bit too busy for victorian, although I have seen some that were that overboard. It is a piece of jewelry though.

My wife thinks it's part of a hair clasp. Very pretty and a good find there!
