Odd / unknown item found in buffalo soldier camp..

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me to determine what this item that was found in a buffalo soldiers camp is. It was found in Texas just north of floydada, I'm very familiar with all the buttons and equipment that were worn and this just doesn't seem to match anything that I know of, it looks much older after cleaning it.

Cool little item - very nice! I'm thinking it is part of the adjustment slide of a pair of suspenders.

An adjustment slide would have teeth on one side I think.
