odd stick ?

I found this today while doing spring cleaning in our barn that was built around 1840 's .The stick is 19 inches long , it looks like it may be the lower part of a walking stick . It's about 1 1/4 inches thick and is a very light wood , like pine . The dark designs are from the original bark that someone carved away . Is there a word for this type of carving ? Could it be Indian ?

My first thought was that it was possibly a roller pattern for wallpaper...

Then I noticed that the branch nubs were not carved level, or below level, with the balance of the stick. That ruled out that potential idea.

It looks to be very symetrical and well incised.

Most likely, it didn't have any utilitarian use, but may have been something that a cabinet maker would carve on willow in oft hours.

Check on the historic ancestry of the former occupants...Danish, Dutch or Swiss craftsmen exhibit this form of work.

Too short for a walking stick.. Could be a butter churn handle that has been carved? But then there would be wear at the top. Hummmmm. Cattle prod? I do have a walking stick carved by my father in 1928 that looks similar but is an obv. cane with curved handle..

My guess would be a horse whip handle,
buggy whip handle...
The one end looks like a metal sleeve
could slide over it to hold the rawhide??
