Dug this yesterday. There are capital letters not pictured an, A C ?, stacked on the top of the spoon. The Pat date looks like 1824 under close scrutiny. The oddities, a lump on the bottom of the spoon, part of it but somethings missing. A hooked shaped top very end missing, and what appears to be hand scribed markings. Any ideas about this odd spoon?

Take a look at this patent. It's dated 1894, but looks like it, and would explain the little lump on the bottom.

Patent 527,115

Very close with the idea and date. The spoon if bent that way would have been around 3 1/2 inches long (children) and the makers marks would have been buried on the inside of the bend. Maybe a early pocket spoon? The top part in the patent picture is pointed and set in the spoon, this is definitely different but very close. The only part that bothers me is all the hallmarks and maker marks would have been buried on the inside curvature. After a little cleaning the lettering is A.C.R.. Thanks for helping.

The only two numbers that are in the date that where questionable was the third # 18(2)4 18(9)4 the other nine for the day has the same straight line bottom seen in the third number, I do think its a match. I also think that the spoon was opened up for big hands later and the hand scribing came when someone needed money and decided to trade the spoon in, why else would there be a letter, or mark, and numbers scratched into the spoon? The differences are slight and the idea of the handle being swept back is the same. The only thing that bothers me is the hallmarks, but I feel that this is a match. Thanks for the id. Arty
