odd return change from the store

not sure what it is a token or foreign coin, got it back in change today.
the front side has 50 cen-times and the back side says empire cherifen the edge around the coin is groved like a quarter and it is the same size of a quarter
any one got any ideas? it looks cool and it feels more like a coin then an arcade token, but since there is no date or anything else on it I don't think it is a coin.

I have one just like yours that my father brought back from overseas when he was in the navy in the 1940's. You are correct. It's from Morocco and I believe it's from 1921.
