looks like a catch for a twist style latch. it may have a seperate latch that when in closed position, rests between the humps

This seems more probable than the bullion weight. The edges on this artifact are not straight asthe bullion's are. :dontknow:

The weight would prove it either way. Then we can move on to other research.

You can get a pair of digital scales for about $10, well worth the money. I use mine all the time.

Not really, most are now made in China, so not much difference.
