Odd Piece of Iron

The top piece is obviously an old ball peen hammer head.
Both pieces were found in the woods on a friends hunting land in southern South Carolina.
The piece is just under 2 inches long and just under an inch on all the other sides.
It is iron. It registers just iron on my ACE 250.
I am curious about the symetrical half circles ond each end.
The "v" shaped grove along the bottom is another question mark.

Looks like a wire-staple spacer to me - the groove goes over the wire, then a squared staple is driven into the pole/board with the legs in the notches

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to take so long to acknowledge them. I've had trouble accessing the site at home.

gord: good suggestion but it would bee hard to withdraw the object (spacer) from under the staple.

trk5capt: another good suggestion. I am not a fireman. I just finished a term as my city's Vice Mayor. Got all kinds of small gifts from public works, park services, law enforcement and fire services.

Vern:

My friends' place is just south of Denmark. If you are familiar with Denmark, the place is adjacent to the golf cource.

Denmark is near Barnwell.

Denmark is in the middle of nowhere.

Strand-Filter--

If this is a head-type with a hole all the way through, could the other item be the wedge driven into the wood handle to expand it. Seems pretty big though.

I think it may be a variation maybe not complete of a DOG used to hold a metal plate in place.it would have a hole to attach it and the other would be open so the bolt would only have to be losened to remove the plate.notice that it has a groove so that one end would lie flat and rebated for clearance so it would overlap the plate, mabe from machinery.Only a guess but think of the clamps to hold a kitchen sink in place, though yours is larger.
happy hunting,Mont

I suggest that it is a clamp to hold down something like a lawnmower, go kart, or scooter gas throthle. Perhaps, to hold down the outer part of the wire with a U bolt.

Or another thougt...One Half of a powerline or wirerope splicer

Here's a pic of a modern day one. And I have seen them with the V groove. I use them for harnassing (bridge building) on safety lines.

Then again, I may be talking through my butt.

It's some kind of spacer. I found several at a building site and as I remember it was used to space decking. Monty

Thanks Monty.

It's nice to have a note from one of the Masters on this site.

Sorry to take so much time to reply. I'm still working the rat race.

I look at the replies at work but the man doesn't want us to use company computers to log onto forums. Oh wait! I am the man. I guess I have to set the example.
