My brother and I went to an area where there was a Confederate camp. This was more of a look around trip and we will go back.
Anyway, on the side of a ridge as we were leaving I got a good signal and started digging.
I got these pieces of what appears to be melted lead. But there was this six inch long piece which baffles me. Depth found was about five inches. It is not magnetic but sets off the MD.
Any idea?

Melted lead that was once something is all I can come up with? Hopefully you'll find more identifiable items when you return.

Is it lead? It does not look like the CW lead we dig in Virginia - which has a distinct white, chalky patina.

If lead, it is likely what we call "camp lead" - melted lead spillage or excess dumped on the ground.

The color is really off in the photos. It does look like the lead you described although the long piece looks somewhat like old wood.
I used to use scrap lead to cast balls for a black powder revolver.
Think it was spillage. Can't think of anything else.

I hope so. A few musket balls were found in the area.
Need to do more research on this particular place.
