think i'm right on this.....but who knows....in 1898 a french pharmist named marcel berger discovered a technique using a catilist burner and an alcohol based oil to disperse into the air fumes to remove odor and kill bactieria. this was used in hosipitals, morgues, and slaughter houses. more to come on this

Thanks for the link mojjax, but after reading it, I'm still not sure what it is.. ???
the one in the link has the little protrutions off to the side and this one they are on either side of the wick...different usage?...I don't know...

Very well made. Heat source. Portable. Designed to cradle something (I doubt very much for cooking - too complicated).

Some kind of Vet equipment for cauterizing surgical tools/equipment on site? Possibly to heat some kind of blood or tissue sample for a test? The arms are curved, indicating maybe a bottle was heated. Baby milk/formula?

Guessing. Just guessing out load.

Form follows function. I was on the right track.

Good hunting TT.

Thanks TT, any ideas on how old it might be?....and in the last picture, is that some kind of hallmark?

Just guessing - from the 1910's. Hallmark? Where? That little thing in the lower right corner? Nah, that's a symbol to keep people from using that photo for their own auctions I think.

I am thinking it is a portable/travel curling iron heater from the 1800s. Did a search on the letters and numbers and that is what came up.

This is a hoot! One vendor on ebay says its a sterilizer for home and medical instruments, Ruby Lane Antiques says it's a curling iron heater. Whatever it is, I think Montana Jim has the best idea - heat your can of beans on the thing. ;D ;D Yep, I can see some guy under a bridge somewhere using it to heat his can of beans, and being the envy of all his comrades. Long live ingenuity!! ;)

Well, nobody want kooties in their hair. :D

It don't take no license or bar exam to sell on ebaY or open an antiques store. ;-)
