Hi all, I found this item the other day. It was together like an ice cream cone when I found it. The cone is exactly 2 inches long and the ball is one inch. There is some gold gilt on the ball where the wire attaches. There is nothing inside the ball. It looks like a bell but I don't think it is. This was found at a site that dates back to the early 1800's. I think it is made of copper. :skullflag:

Looks like some sort of decorative jingle bell? Appears a bit too fragile for a crotal ball. Maybe the ball fell out or rusted out of the bell.

I agree with your idea of bell. I believe the other piece MAY be a scabbard tip. I have seen the piece before but I am not 100% sure. Crouch has one in his book on page 75 that has the scallobs on it like yours but they are not as pronounced. If Cannonball Guy comes around I believe he will probably know for sure. He is pretty sharp.

Thinking kids cup and ball game.

That's got my vote, wooden handle and string tying the ball on. Found with the ball in the cup, that what my grand kid would do. When he's done with something that's where it's left. Sometimes I could kill him, but grandma won't let me do it.

Looks like a bell that was added to the bottom of a cone earring. I've seen one pair that used a blue faceted bead in place of the silver ball. Then again, it may have came from an Indian town. Brass, silver & copper ball & cones, bells, wire bracelets, etc. were popular trade items in the 17th & 18th centuries. Colonials used bells for live stock and for turkey, too. Nice find!

Cone may be from a gravesite used for flowers...

The crotal bell is just a decorative bell, nothing more...

It looks like a Victorian Christmas ornament, and it appears to be brass. More than likely there was a wire/string attached to the loop on the bell, and it went through the cone to hang on the tree. It would have been hung like a reverse ice cream cone. The bell like piece may not have had a clanger so it could have been stuffed with spices potpourri like a tussy mussy. Neat find, Breezie

do you have a pic of one like it Breezie? I never thought of that but wouldn't it be hard to get potpourri in that little thing? I think it was a bell and the clanger rusted away.

The cone may be the remains of a "tussy mussy" lapel pin.

Sky, no I couldn't find a photo, but I didn't look extensively. Whether it was a bell or bell shaped, I feel like it was some type of ornament, which could have been on a chatelaine. The 'cone' shape was very popular during the Victorian times. Breezie
