I found this one at the Walmart coin star earlier today and, at first glance I thought it was modern. When I took the change out of my pocket this evening I saw that it was a 1945 S. The finish is very nice, but the coin shows signs of wear. It is also very slick feeling. The tarnish on the back came off with a light wiping. Could this have been dipped in something? Chrome plated? How would I tell? The pictures don't show how glossy the finish really is. Last picture shows it with a 2022 dime.

A war nickel is 35 per cent silver, so they usually look a little more shiny than a regular nickel.
The pictures don't do the coin justice. Like Toddspoint said, it looks like it was chrome plated.

I think I might have a partial answer…. I too have come across both buffalo nickels and 40% silver war time nickels that are buffed to a shine, but usually low on details and a good bit worn. Upon finding the third one in a week in rolled coin I got from the bank for my day job, I noticed paper and glue…. I did some looking and it’s quite possible these coins were used in some type of set, non-US Mint created, usually put together by companies—2nd/3rd party for sale…like a Fingerhut for example, used to offer examples of silver coins and some were in plastic holders and some were affixed to a page/booklet or cardboard placard of sorts…. I Don’t know the exact company, but over the years my father ended up with some and I have seen others at flea markets and estate sales… Never anything of high quality, but representative of A series like nickels or 1964 silvers last year etc…. That’s my two cents…hopefully it make sense!😵‍💫😬👍🏼
