Why do you think it's a button? Just a question. Is there a sign of a shank or where a post would be?

It was a 2 piece there is a slight rim around it and no other signs of prior attachment points on the back, now whether the back was iron or not I don't know?HH

The rear side of the rim isn't folded over enough to hold a button-back, so it is not the front of a 2-piece button.

I can't tell what the size of the coin in the photo is (1/2 real, 1 real, 2 real?), so I have to ask for a size measurement of the other object.

It's a 1/2, It appears the back would have been rolled over the front similar to a Jacksonian style button. HH

There is just enough of what I will call a rim for that to work?
