Here is a piece that I am having a hard time identifying. Buckleboy thought I should put it here to give more people a crack at it. Found at a cavalry fort that was only around in the 1870's.Piece is about the size of a 50 cent piece. I assumed it was a button but could be something else. I look at the design with SH and OO on the wings of a fly-SHOOFLY, I guess. Has a light iron back with no markings and is not lead filled. Am trying to get Albert's button book. Had it years ago but was unable to find exact button though it seems there was another one in there with a similar background. Anyone seen something like this? Thanks for any help. Walt

Could be off a "Punkah" shoo fly fan. These were used during the 19th century and typically operated by slaves....just a possibility.

It looks like a bridle rosette to me because of the back & size, plus the shoo fly horse/bridle theme. Breezie

Sounds logical to me. Definitely the word from horsemen vocabulary.

Thanks everyone for thoughts and comments. I suppose it could be part of horse tack but I would think it would have been lead filled to be more durable. Thanks again and keep on digging.

Not sure about that piece, but when I saw it it reminded me of one of my buttons.
That is a really neat relic, and I wish you the best in getting it ID'ed!

Well here's a bee that might help somebody - not sure if it is an exact match to the one you posted though Bigcy.

I think Breezie might be right. Most if not all civil war period rosettes were lead filled but later ones had tin backs. I've seen some that had both the back and face made of tin.
