Re: Odd Brass Object

Strange and cool... the bottom of it looks broken, what does the other end look like?

I see the images of two people... man and woman?

The images make me believe it's orientation is up and down, not on it's side... possibly a finial?

I have no idea.

Re: Odd Brass Object

I'm thinking wooden spoon or fork or knife with the bass as some sort of decoration, kinda like fancy china wear..

then again i have no CLUE...

Re: Odd Brass Object

It it square? I'm assuming by your measurements it's kinda square(ish). Do you think it's a grip for a dipping pen? Maybe there was a wooden shaft and the nib was on the other side?

Re: Odd Brass Object

It is a very strange object. I forgot to weigh it, and Ill do so here. It weighs in at 47 grams, so it seems to be too heavy to have been a piece of silverware. I also see the images of two people which is why I focused the picures on them. I can take additional photos if you like, just let me know what you want to see.

Thank you again for your input,

Re: Odd Brass Object

I sure looks like a piece of a broken, decorated spoon handle--but not being made of pewter I don't know...

:icon_scratch:

Is the piece Hollow? (I take it that you mean that there is a wooden dowel inside of it?) Can I see a photo of just one of the ends of it? Does it appear to be broken on both ends or just one?

Here are some photos of different angles. The wooden dowel piece runs the legnth more or less. The hole appears to be pretty uniform through the middle of the object. Im still clueless - what could it be?

The hole runs the legnth of the object. I can slide the dowel in or out of both ends. I tried to get a photo showing the entire hole but it did not show up well.

I actually did make that collage with paint. All you need is a lot of windows open at once and a bit of patience. Open a window with paint first. You will want to make the wite area you work with fairly large so you can paste pictures into it. Then open a second window with paint of the first picture you want to copy in. Use the area select option, make the box around what you want to copy, and then select the copy option from the edit menu. Then go to the first window and paste the picture in. Then repeat with more photos and move them around to make your collage. Hope this helps.

Thank You so much Still Waters! Great instructions. When I copied to the new paint window it superimposed over the previous one. Wow, I thought my problems were back. But I was able to move it around the page. Resizing first was the balm, and making a collage is possible. I put my first effort as the desktop. Man I hope to get a brownie point for that....

So anyway this had been bugging me for so long. Now I've progressed another step!!!! :hello2:

Thanks, Really.

I am not really sure how this would fit into a parasol. Also, wouldnt this be a bit too masculine for such an object?

sorry i guessed utensil after pull-tab-mike

the item looks really old. the center hole is off-center maybe hand made. maybe predate silverware...ha ha!
i mean because of the wood dowel thingy. seems like if it were metal on one end the tang or 'wood' piece would be metal.
any chance a ferule letter opener, magnifying glass handle or salad set, something else wood on both ends.

or just some decorative piece.

Those are definatly good possabilities Intimer. Never seen anything like those in the photo. I agree this looks old, very early, but there is just nothing to compare it to. Frustrating, very frustrating.

I am going to go out on a limb and make a guess that it is an old pointer of some sort. Possibly used by a professor, or a clergyman.

One possibility is a Torah pointer, used to read from ancient scrolls.

. These tend to be handed down for many generations, and some date back to the Romans.

Just a guess...
