October 2015 agates

I spent a few nights up on the North shore of Lake Superior and I wanted to share a few pics of some agates I found. Nothing huge but like I say a pretty little agate is a pretty little agate. I hope you enjoy.

A couple of those look like petrified wood....you can see the wood grain in them. Beautiful specimens!!

Thanks T.C. A couple might look like wood grain but these are all agate. I do occasionally find petrified wood when out looking. It is fairly rare around here but since I am always looking I have a small collection of petrified wood now. Most of it still looks the color of natural wood though I do have a couple exceptions. A number of them have such a natural wood look to them that I have had to tap them against a rock before I was certain they were petrified.

I did treat them with mineral oil which helps bring out the details. My usual process is I soak them in mineral oil for about an hour, then put them under a light (to heat them up) for about an hour, then I dry them and put them under a light for another hour to finish the drying. Many of these did sort of have a natural polish going too being from the lake shore.

Nice agates there, I hear you can tell how old a laker is by counting the rings.... haha! jk. I find agatized wood that has moss agate mixed with it in the form of limb casts in Montana. but I have never heard of a laker being in limbcast form.... Although that would be pretty dang cool! Happy hunt'in.

Haha. Thanks Zee. Lake superior agates are said to be the oldest agates on Earth. There must be rings I am not seeing.
