Nothing written on the other side ? My first thought is some kind of payment token.

I see a $ sign...is it stamped?

Take a soft pencil and some paper and shade to get an impression...you might be able to answer your own question...

OK, wild guess here, but I have an octagon tag just like yours except for what is written. Mine is a token from a tomato canning factory. Here's what they did, and it's really cool: The workers were supposed to sort the tomatos a bushel at a time. The boss put a token in the bottom of a bushel basket, then it was filled with just picked tomatoes. The worker would sort a bushel, and pocket the token. Sort another bushel, pocket the token. End of the day, he was paid "by the bushel" and the proof was in how many tokens he had. Yours may be something totally different, but mine is octagon and had the name of the local cannery (Defunct for about 50 years). But there was an old man in the area with same last name. Turned out, was his grandfathers cannery. He sorted many bushels as a teen and recognized the token immediately. he then showed me about 50 he still had!
