All,

Found the following item while diving a wreck, at first I thought it was some sort of a bullet or musket ball. Then after cleaning it I noticed it had a seam or what looked like a seam on the side of it. Cleaned it up some more and noticed that I could worked the two halves back and forth until it unscrewed, never seen anything like it.

Anyone have a clue?

Montana Jim & TreasureTales

Sorry about not posting more info, and no it is not a bomb, worked around those many years ago when I was in the service.

Size is about 5/8" in dia and is a at least a couple of oz in weight. The site that I found this has provided a lot of odd items with lots of questions as to just what some of this stuff is. I'll put a few more items on this site later this week and with more and clearer detail than this one.

PS: thanks for being concerned

What kind of wreck were you diving... an old spanish galleon or a 1920s runabout? Where you in fresh or salt water, lake or river? I know these seem like stupid questions but it may help someone narrow their search to help you out. It may not even be a boat/fishing/maritime piece but associated with something else altogether so every clue helps! 8)

I look forward to seeing the responses... good luck!

UPDATE: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,62678.0.html I just saw your other post! Awesome... and helps explain a little bit.

It was in a freshwater lake, wreck was buried in muck, no idea as to the year or type of boat/ship other than it was wooden beamed and had slat sides. Doesn't look like any fishing boat I've read about on the lakes here, possible some sort of a cargo or merchant ship. I also found two coins on it, one a 1775 8 reals (sp) and a 1834 large disk penny.

Hope this helps out.

Is the thing threaded or did it just slide together and apart? We need all the little bits of information possible. Just like any good mystery, we need some clues before the case can be solved.

TT... he did say it unscrews... and the sides have those little grip bump deals to hold while loosen/tighten.

This item seams familiar but I cannot place it. :P

TreasureTales,

Just went and pulled it from the case and looked it over again. Fulled it back apart and it seems that it may be more modern than what I first thought as it has metal threaded post aprox 1/8 dia. There also appears to be the remains of a piece of braided thread around the threaded stud. If I didn't know better, I would have to say it was some type of fishing sinker, however I've been drowning worms in this lake for close to 40 years and have never seen anything like it.

I was thinking sinker... or net weight, but kinda small to be a net weight. What the heck do you net besides minnows in fresh water anyway?

Before outlawed in upper midwest you could use gill nets and catch any fish that would stick his head through the net and try to back out. The nets had wood floats on top and lead barrel sinkers "large" along bottom. The item could possibly be a gill net weight. It would work.
