I researched both figures mentioned in the inscription - George S. Wise was the first President of Tel Aviv University, and Michael J. Murphy was NYPD commissioner in the 1960's.

No idea if it could be silver (probably not, but the stamps on the bottom might provide clues), but was wondering if the NYPD affiliation gives it any value. It is not the most exciting police collectible, but certainly one-of-a-kind.

Any police or kitchenware buffs want to help on a price? If it turns out to not be particularly collectible, I will hold onto it. Very well made, clean, and cheap ($3!)

It appears to be a gift from the commissioner to dr Wise

George S. Wise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You are probably right, it seems like a gift given to a friend or political ally. Mr. Wise and Mr. Murphy were both prominent figures in their time, which makes me want to test for silver (but I need to get new acid first, my current batch went bad). Would be sort of insulting to get a stainless pitcher made by a company known for silver if I were in that position :laughing7:

Wonder why it was donated to the TS? Seems like something the family would hold onto... Dr. Wise has been dead for quite a while. Very strange that it popped up today.

Oh well, guess I'll never know. I will test for silver. If it's stainless, I will put it up on eBay with a dollar start and see where it goes, unless I discover a solid market for this sort of thing.

Got a magnet?

Stainless isn't always magnetic, but often is.

Actually don't have a good magnet, will pick one up today.
