I love these things. You are right, we don't see enough of them. Here is one I found last summer. Due to the grainy lithic it crumbled some after I brought it in. I let it dry too fast (thanks Gator, you taught me that). It is concave on both sides .

Ok ,so are they articfacts or are they just rocks. Can you tell us more? What was a nutting stone used for? I dont think the ones I have in the pictures was used for just busting nut.

A " nutting" stone was used as a platform to keep a "nut" in place when struck. So they don't shoot out in every direction.

In my area most nutting stones were used with acorns. It all depended on the size of the nuts as too the size of the holes.

Ok I will take that. So why do they need more holes than one? The picture in the middle is a front and back of the same stone. It is broken on the bottom.
The top pictures are or the same rocks front and back.

Mabey because not all nuts are the same size. Or just because one got worn to the point of needing to start another. Think about doing it yourself to eat. Would you want to carry a bunch or just one?

The one I gave a photo of has the indents for nutting as well as a area for grinding the meat once removed from the shell.

I was just looking at some of these again and thought some look like they could be part of a fire starting toolkit. Just a thought.

Yep something other than just a nutting stone, the hole is not like a place just to set a nut.The hole looks like it was worked out for a different reason.
