Cool subject. I ran into this thought about 6 months ago in my town when I found a small area near a state road that once had two colonial homes on a long gone side road to them.

I found 3 of the biggest trees around. One is about like yours, 5 feet wide?. The other two are close. I also found one big monster near my home, near a river, and the beavers tried to kill it by chewing all the way around. But the tree has deep wrinkles? if you can picture it, and they can't get the outer bark in there, so somehow the tree still lives.

PS I have a 4+ foot wide oak in my yard

Possibly over a hundred years old. Several trees around here are pre state hood and cannot be cut down. I love those old historical trees.

Trees are a gift form above and great for the environment & everyone loves them - anyway thanks for sharing your picture with us and I wish you many more great finds while out dirt fishing.

Big trees are treasures also. Like they say, "if they could only talk".

Beautiful tree! Visiting my former Virginia foothill small city a few years ago, I spent part of my time wandering & poking around in thick woods surrounding the city. Not into metal detecting yet, but always interested in seeing creatures & forest trees. Only a half mile from town, I came upon the largest ancient tree I'd ever seen in central Virginia, screened by thick brush and many tall younger trees. Kept quiet about this except to a few trusted people as that small patch isn't protected from cutting. Andi
