Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I was metal detecting on laurel mountain in western PA when I found this thing. The spot had just been excavated for construction (about 10-12 feet of soil had been removed that day), so I did noth think I would find anything at all. What's weird is that it gave a solid 12-40 on my Etrac, but gave a low tone. I have never had that happen before. At first I thought GOLD!, but I believe that is not likely here. This is what I can say about it.

It is metallic. If i strike it on a hard surface it will deform a little.
It is fairly soft.
It is not radioactive. Yes I checked it. LOL
It is not magnetic.

Any Ideas

ummm dude ..lol put it down .. in a glass jar you have Nickeline or niccolite: is a mineral consisting of nickel arsenide, NiAs, containing 43.9% nickel and 56.1% arsenic.
Small quantities of sulfur, iron and cobalt are usually present, and sometimes the arsenic is largely replaced by antimony. This last forms an isomorphous series with breithauptite (nickel antimonide). see got a rock for the rest! http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/h...ied-post-here-gimme-good-picture-3-4-a-2.html
soz m8 Very rare but also extremely toxic.

I performed the nickel test and it was negative, tried it again with the same result. I tried the same swabs on a brass key that I suspected may be nickel plated and the swab instantly turned bright pink. I am thinking that maybe I should look for a scrap yard that has an XRF gun, that is a very accurate technology.
