Wow!!! I found the biggest penny I have ever seen. I also killed the coin. When I flipped the plug over it was right where the scoop went in. Oh well I guess it happens. I was hunting an old school yard when I found the 1962 big penny. It gave me a dollar signal at 4.5 ". The school was built in 1929 but I don't know what was there before that. We also found a 1942 merc. dime and tons of clad. Here is a little history on the coin.

This is a British One Penny Elizabeth II Gratia Regina F D 1962 coin. It is a large penny , a large cent coin that measures 1 1/4" across. The series of large British pennies concludes with the mintings of the penny with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D. At least one 1954 penny was struck, apparently for private internal purposes at the Royal Mint, but it was not until 1961 that there was a need for more pennies to be minted, so production continued from 1961 to 1967, with 1967 being the last minting.

dang the coin was in such good shape to. Got to hate it when that happens. Still a nice find in my book!

Jack,
That is a nice coin...don't beat yourself up too much about the scratch. At least it was not a rare coin you hit. Every few months at the end of a long hunt I kill a coin but it makes me slow down for a few months and make careful recoveries.

I found a 1936 English large cent a few months ago in a local park and yesterday I found a 1940 Canadian small cent in the same park. Those large foreign coins really get the blood flowing out in the field. It drives me nuts waiting to get home to see what I have.

Congrats on the finds and happy hunting.
