Now thats a 'big knot'

I went for a walk in the woods today, & 'spied' this
very large 'knot' on an Oak tree.
It is called 'burl wood', craftsmen like the irregular swirl of the
grain of the wood, it makes some beautiful bowls.
It is an 'abnormal' growth caused by insects or fungus.
It can be hard to work with, it may crack easily, if cut the wrong
way.

Thanks Carolina, after the 'cool weather' sets in, I
will post some more from the 'deep woods', I have to stay
on the trails, & roads for now, (you know why). :-\

Being a craftsman yourself what are you going to make out of it? Geat picture, I love natures ways :).

That's a little out of my 'league', I better stick to
'walking sticks'. :P

Depending on the wood type, and the size, that would make one beautiful gunstock.

Nice Fossis,

Appears to be a live tree, probably take years for it to dry. My first thought was to cut 2" or 3" slabs from it to use for table tops. I have never seen an Oak burl, but I imagine it would be some beautiful wood.

Yeah, its live, but I can't cut it because it's on
'public hunting land'.
I have seen some beautiful wood bowls.

Re: Now thats a 'big knot'

Nice find fossis. Too bad thats a live tree, that burl would make a heck of a gunstock.

Re: Now thats a 'big knot'

That's a big 'un Fossis. My first thought was that you had shot the tree with that rifle and were showing us your trophy! ::)

Re: Now thats a 'big knot'

That is a big knot. Things like this, you and I see everyday and really don't think anything of it. We got several too on some live oaks. Just never thought of taking a pic to share. Thank you for doing sharing "big knot" with us.

;) RR
