I was driving home from work the other day, which takes about 10 minutes. It is down a major highway but is undeveloped. Mesquite and Live Oak trees crowd the pastures. For the first time I noticed an old homesite off the highway. I have been going down this road for 20+ years and never noticed it before. I think metal detecting makes people more aware of thier surroundings.

I was curious if any of your good hunting spots were right under your nose and you never realized it until one day it just happened to catch your eye.
I wonder how many other old sidewalks and rock foundations are on our way to work?

It's funny how MD'ing changes your personal level of awareness.

Just last week I noticed a grassy open space the size of a football field not far from where I live; Unusual? Well, no, except for the 4 concrete driveway aprons that lead to nowhere. That afternoon I checked with the village planning department and learned there were 4 houses (vintage 1920's) torn down by a commercial developer at that location 2 years ago. I am now awaiting permission from the developer (but not holding my breath) :P

Yeah I'd have to agree with that MD'ing makes ones awareness of their enviroment much more accute.

I find my self looking at the ages of trees, a few trees standing alone in a vacant field, or in a line. I now know of many abandon or forgotten reclaimed by the woods, often just up to a few hundred yards off the road because of my MD vision ;D. I find myself looking for depressions in the land or changes in the soil or any number of things I would have laughed at myself for noticing only 12 months ago.

Now if they all give up some goodies I can get a good laugh back at myself.
