Darn, I thought my scoop was in bad shape before now. After spending about 30 hrs digging in stones and sand the consistency of old cement the back side of my heavy duty aluminum scoop was caved in, making emptying it difficult.

Unfortunately, my solutions really made things worse:
I decided to take a piece of wood (2”x2”x10”) and place it on the inside of the scoop and hammer out the caved-in part from the inside. Things were going well UNTIL I began working on the back of the scoop and ended-up breaking the seam and pushing out the bottom of the scoop!
First, I thought that I could solder the seam back in place: long story, but after $50.00 of material (MapX gas, torch, starter, silver solder) no luck; the solder would not adhere to the scoop.
Second, I thought that I could weld the seam shut. At the store while buying all the soldering materials I saw a small cutting/welding kit composed of an oxygen tank and MapX gas. Again, it didn’t work. Just could not melt the scoop with the small torch. Now out another $60.00. That makes about $110.00 spent and still no scoop.
Now I’m thinking I could use a strong bonding agent to “glue” the bottom on the scoop. Buy another scoop? Better yet, I’ll find an auto shop that welds and have them spot-weld the bottom so it doesn’t fall off. That should be cheap and thanks to an earlier discussant for the suggestion.
But for now, I wired the scoop together. Have the itch.

Do you hear that? The Beach is calling and tide is falling and my Excal is ready for a walk.

Just go find a gold ring and treat yourself to a new scoop already. :-)

Time to blow taps on that one! Time to get a GOOD one.

Install a stainless steel or titanium lip to scoop.

Yikes!
What we have here is know as an "Escalation of Commitment"
Lol!
Might be time for a stainless scoop and leave the aluminum for what it was meant for,...beer cans!

I do admire your effort though brother!

I have several scoops, one is the aluminum Beach Brute II, I added a stainless steel lip to it, it protects the lip and after 5 years the lip is still perfect....

I think the integrity of the aluminium has been compromised, maybe time to fork out for a new one, what do scoops cost in the states?

Good ones are over $200

That scoop has been used hard and put up wet. HH.

Battle marks and all, it served you well. Sad to hear you put out so much on the repairs just for it to redline. Time to upgrade. If you are digging in rocks, think about a heavier scoop, those RTG alums just can't handle the punishment. Check out Stealth 920i, T-Rex 9" (very heavy though), and Stavr M9 (light and made for rocks). Stavr is my personal choice, comes from the Ukraine, Stavr is also a TNet Ruslan from Stavr is also a TNet member. Does take about 3 weeks for delivery but well worth it. Thanks for sharing, good luck with the search.

It's time for a real scoop made out of stainless steel. The Sunspot Stealth scoops are guaranteed for life. Now don't anyone say, "That's life." :laughing7:

Hence why I only use well made stainless.
And when I say well made... I mean ALL high grade (316 or better) stainless 1 inch heavy wall... simple welded three point.
I do not how many years I have pounded it... pried it... used every bit of my weight pulling it.
And looks like is a year old at best.

Sure,.. its heavier...
Heavier duty as well... heh

If anyone has put scoops "to the test"... it would be me.

My girl uses an old alum of mine in the sands and wet.
Which IMO is where Alum belongs... the soft sand.

I have no idea what it would cost to ship (if he will) to the US but I bought a VERY sturdy stainless steel scoop in Brazil for about $120USD.

Sand Scoop Profi-3 - BIP METAL

I am very happy with the quality of construction.

I like that scoop...
Welds and braces are better than most out on the market.
IF I knew the maker I would have one ordered with full welds.

Anyway...
Here is a good new scoop for "moderate to heavy" IMO ...
Good cut... for lighter on target scoops.
simple strong design.
A good scoop IF you are good at targeting your hit.
