Re: Now here's something you don't dig up every day

Very cool find. I will have to say that is something you don't dig up everyday.

Now where is the rest of that bear?

I'd say!! It looks hand tooled. Can you speak to any of the Native Americans up there and see if they recognize the work. Congrats...Lance

Is that a talon from a bird? Neat find! HH, Mike

Thats a brand new quarter! Oh... you mean the bear claw! Thats a nice find! As someone suggested, I would take it to a local eskimo historian and see what they can tell you.

I do wonder how long bear claws can last underground without becoming somewhat petrified or disintigrating....

You have to admit... it'd probably be a pretty odd thing to find 4" deep in a seldom used park in Alaska as well!

Re: Now here's something you don't dig up every day

It has started to peel a little from moisture and Alaska freeze/thaw and i was wondering the same thing. How long does something like this stay in the ground before it begins to disintegrate. I'll check with the museams (downtown and native) to see what they can tell me. Thanks for the responses!

Very small bear that one can from! I'm sure hope that bear was legal! ;)

Re: Now here's something you don't dig up every day

I was thinking the same thing on the legal size limit, but there may not have been a size limit in those days (depending on how old it is).

Re: Now here's something you don't dig up every day

Looks like it might have been a necklace ? Nice find !

Nice find Gadget, that metal looks like silver see if it has any hallmarks,if it has you can buy a book on hallmarks that will tell you how old it is, and where it was made. Cheers Raoul
