Nothing Yesterday But A "Thin Dime"

Put this one in Bill D in VA's Morgan silver dollar category.

I was back at the house where I found the beautiful silver pocket watch cover and I got a hit which turned out to be what appeared to be a small thin silver coin -- a 1/2 real or maybe my first trime I thought--it was dirty in the field so I couldn't ID it.
Came home to disappointment and a laugh as it said "Thin Dime" on it and "Play Coin" with a cup of coffee . I think this is the 2nd or third play coin I have dug and they always throw me. Seems others have been unearthed and the "silver lining" no pun intended is that there is one on eBay with a Buy It Now of $10. Anyway, I'd rather have had the real or the trime!

I did find my first heel tap though, you know the kind with all the little holes in it. Seems complete. This is an indicator for me...anyone know what years they were in use? I'll post a pic later.

In the mean time I hope you found more than "just a thin dime" and if you did have a cup of coffee on me!

I found a similar "play dime" before in a field. It was deep, rang in like a half real, and even was roughly the size of one. Was surprised to see "play money" or whatever the exact wording was

If you were asking how long heel taps were in use, I can remember them being used when I was a kid in the very late 60's ( that's 1960's for you wisenheimers).

Erik - I can't begin to tell you how many times I've dug an aluminum token or play money at an early site and had my heart broken. And they seem to appear not just in yards, but even in the middle of some of the cultivated fields I like to hunt, and I can't figure out for the life of me how they got there. So I feel for ya man. Hopefully the next sliver of silver you unearth will be the real deal.

I found one of those 3 feet from where I found my trime about one minute later. I thought I had a trime spill and a heart attack.

Ya small coins really get ya some times, nice find just the same!

The small coin I remember was penny that had the edges worn away, the face was familiar but the size didn't fit.

Been let down way too many times, So I try to never "Assume" what a Find is while in the field.
At least you got something.
