The weather was most excellent today. Since I have gotten permission to sweep all of my hometown school properties, I have been itching to sweep our football stadium. Or town was formed in 1866 and started football in 1922. I can't (yet) find the history of just how long our field at this location has actually been used but I can tell you it was in use in the early 60's to present. It probably goes back to 1922 but I can't prove that yet.
Anyway, just my second outing with my new Minelab X-Terra 705. There are a couple of areas I was MOST anxious to sweep. The main entrance is paved, so I'm not even thinking of that area.
So, the first area I wanted to concentrate on is a secondary entrance. Top of a hill with a narrow sidewalk and grass on either side. Ticket sales at the gate. So I figured there should be some targets on both sides of this sidewalk.
After about 20 minutes of digging every target, it became very apparent that there was nothing but trash up there.
Got some old soda cans and foil but no target worth digging.
The other area that I was excited about is a hill located at one endzone. I remember in my days seeing folks on blankets all over this hill. A few years ago most of the hill was taken over by a fieldhouse/concession stand.
Since I'm still learning the detector, I took a notebook along with the target ID chart and made up a log to track what the machine told me versus actual finds. I'm learning, today was a great success in that regard. I moved to the top of the hill next to the fence and a now locked out entrance. Sweeping there I found my first coin of the day, 1965 quarter about 6" deep. I found a couple of pennies then got a hit I'm still scratching my head over. It read 2-4" deep and TID of 42, which should be something silver. I carefully dug down and around...and around....and around. Pinpointer never located the exact target and after 30 minutes, I decided to refill the hole and clean it up. I left it in great shape (can not really tell anyone had dug anywhere) and marked that spot in my mind to return to. I will sharpshoot the spot later. I'll take care with it but thank goodness it's not in a traffic area now. From the older days it was an entrance.
After moving down to the concession stand area, I started lighting up. Unfortunately (but expected) all coins are modern. Some were right on top and drove the detector nuts with signal. Sounded more like a Geiger counter. LOL
It was a good exercise for me. I found a variety of metals and coins anywhere from surface to 8" deep.
I did get a few hits 10 or more inches but let those slide also. THOSE will be for the next time. Some pieces I have no clue what they are and am soaking them and putting some in a sonic cleaner to try and ID.
Stay tuned. I have some research to do since I have been given permission to sweep all city property. I want to locate some old areas to sweep and will also be hitting the city park. This weather is perfect for sweeping. Oh, and I need to get me a box of trash bags. I loaded my trash pouch 3X and tossed junk in the dumpster. I could have used bags for the amount of trash that has blown onto the property. I want to keep my privileges on these properties and also try to set an example. HH
