Another one from the other day's hunt..new pics added..

I was thinking this a Rhyolite rock that was rich in K-feldspar? After I cracked it into a few pieces just to save a small piece for the collection I noticed the interior has many small vugs with tiny cubic purplish crystals, are these fluorite? Had to push magnification to limit to get the last few shots.

wow, what a nice specimen, well formed crystal...does look like fluorite on rhyolite but I'm not familiar with the occurrence. Do you have hardness pics to test the hardness? With the size, it seems picks would be the only way to go. Don't try to scratch it, just put some pressure on it to see if you get a "bite"

And with the other red/clear crystals check the hardness too - it's either scalenohedral quartz or dogtooth calcite. Normally I'd say quartz, but if fluorite grew in that vug, the fluorite and calcite both probably formed as a precipitate and not as a primary formation. Regardless, that is one cool specimen 8-)

Thx Stdenis_jd, I didn't think to much of it until I broke it open, I was just going to save a small chunk and toss the rest.. I do have a pick set and I did give it a try but the crystals are to small and I couldn't get a result..

I did post an id request over at mindat forum over the weekend as well and got some very informative feedback about the rock. A couple of gentleman each wrote articles on the same/similar rocks from an area in central WI that was in a mineral publication of some kind. I should be receiving a copy to read from the one fellow. If interested in it let me know.

I've never been into mineralogy. But I've wondered about it, inspired quite a bit by this thread.

So, I looked up hardness pics and found a set here:

$96.00, so I went to Amazon and found it about the same. I'll end up getting a kit, it's too late from my kids & Christmas, maybe my birthday.....

That's the set I have, they are bit pricey but I do use them often.

Flourite is common in the Rhyolite series. Might be porphyry, rather then Rhyolite.
