Not what I was looking for....

Today I took a long drive and a chance hoping to catch the owner of a place where a small Civil War skirmish supposedly took place and got luck, I got permission.

I didn't have but a few hours to hunt about a 30 acre field. I found a light bulb base, a zinc penny (damnit), several modern bullets and the usual pieces of horse tack, sickle teeth, and some chunks of lead, unfortunately I can't say that I found anything that I can honestly say is directly related to the Civil War.

The only half way cool things I found were these spent Indian bullets, which is really weird because originally I wasn't even looking for them. It's just a bummer they are pretty much all broken.

Glad you got to hunt a new permission! Perhaps the next hunt will yield CW artifacts...Good catches on the Indian artifacts.

On the bright side those artifacts are pretty awesome. I've been detecting for 3 years and I would have thought I'd stumble on some. I've even walked some fields and have not found any. I've found one full arrowhead in my life and it's one of my favorite finds.

I don't find them very often but I don't spend a lot of time specifically looking for NA artifacts. However when I do find them they are almost always near a spring or spring fed creek. Another thing that helps is to look along fence lines, along paths and under trees where cows gather and keep the grass from growing. And it helps to look in those places the day after a good rain.

This place had all of those things going on for it and there were tons of flint chips so I just started watching out for them and checking the rocks that came out of the holes I dug. A few of those pieces I dug and a few were surface finds.
