After obtaining permission from the homeowner I hunted an old home site along the Emigration Trail in Utah. In the veg garden I got a good signal. Two inches down I saw what I thought was a large cent.

But on closer examination I discovered I had a KGIII 1807 half penny in my hand!!! It's my second oldest coin to date and the most out of place coin I have found so far.

How did this get here?? The only explanation I can come up with is that a British convert to Mormonism must have brought it with them at some point. Man, if this coin could talk...

Way to small for a bullet hole unless it was a Red Rider B.B. gun.lol

The hole was so they could wear it on a necklace more than likely. If the wearer was from where the coin was from it could be there way of being close to their Original homeland.

Definitely an unusual find for your neck of the woods. WTG!

....rare find indeed, but its not uncommon at all to find even 1700's coins in mid 19 th century sites(especially reals.I found a Draped bust Large cent a few years ago in a 1850's site

HAVE FOUND THOSE AT STAGE COACH STOPS
i THINK ONE i GOT LAST YEAR HAD A HOLE IN IT AND IS SAME DATE

It wouldn't have had to be an Englishman who dropped it.

.....trousers did not have pockets so coinage was often strung on a string.

I forgot to mention that on the back under where Britannia is sitting is scratched the date 1858. Seeing as where I found it was on the Mormon Trail I am still leaning towards the British convert losing it.

New digger in Utah here. Great find.

Nice find. You just never know sometimes!

A pic of it's backside would be nice.
The hole is off-center, I don't think it would make sense to pierce it so badly in it's (not quite...) middle to wear around the neck... But that's just me and I'm meticulous when it comes to hand-crafts...

Nice find

Here you go.

The hole is weird, not round as would be if it was drilled... the "lips" show wear, especially on the head side like there were raised at first.

Well...anyway, enjoy your find :-)
