When I was growing up in Methuen, MA way back when, it was definately smaller than it is today and was considered a quaint little town. The homes were old and steeped with history. A self appointed town historian allowed me to detect his pre-civil war era yard which was once part of a bigger farm. My first significant find (at 16 years old) came from his property. A Massachusetts Artillery button. I am including a photo of it. I lost it for many years. Thirty years later, when mom and dad were selling the "big house" I was helping to move the washing machine...and lo and behold, there was the button. AGAIN! On the floor, under the old washing machine. Another find that I find interesting, is this civil war button that was flattened under 100+ years under the pine needles of Hampstead, NH's Old Shingle Mill in the woods. Another button found on my property was a Massachusetts button. Still in clean condition. I think it may have come in on a load of fill for the yard. Clay marbles and little figurines are the result of detecting and digging in Rockport, MA. The old coin purse is exactly how I found it. Wheaties intact. May not be silver and gold, but any piece of history saved from the ground is worth its weight..in GOLD.
