Do you have a freshly exposed surface somewhere?
Could be several things, including but not limited to: Rhyolite, jasper either way it looks to be a brecciated something.
To me.. it looks liek it contains quartz.. but it's all fractured up.. The black lines are not any time of crystals or minerals just silt or hardened sand holding the stone together.. Thou soem of the images make me think it could be jasper, even marble.. greta pics btw.
Thank you on the comment..I know it is very heavy and seems to shimmer best way I can put it..It does not contain any kind of crystal formations but the look is what I find so fascinating.
Could you bring it to a local university or rock club and ask?
Could be heaps of stuff. I think wizard is on the right track - it looks to contain quartz in one way or another.
It might be fine grained quartzite, for example. Could also be Rhyolite, or even jasper.
The black stuff might be magnetite or hematite. Magnetic?
If you rub a unglazed piece of porcelain against it, do you get any color? Which?
I think I might be able to take it to the local university...It is not magnetic unless my magnet is too weak...The black portion leaves a black streak and the brown-red leaves nothing that I see..I did find more of it on my own land in the past few days in our woods. When I found the one in the pictures it was lodged under tree roots if that helps any? Regardless of what it is I think it is pretty neat how it has formed...That is what peaked my curiosity on it. Thank you all for helping me.
