My wife needed to go to the store today, and of course I wanted to detect a bit while she did... I was going to go to the good ol' soccer park, but on the way I thought to myself that it was going to be damn hot there, as there are no trees except in the picnic area...
So I decided to go to a small park in the middle of Sebring that also had a freshwater beach there.. Although the beach has been closed to swimming for a few years due to a sinkhole and a drowning, I figured that since the park had trees everywhere, at least I could run for the shade if I got to hot (it was clear and low 80's today)... It also has a very tiny tot lot that last time produced a couple dollars..
Wife drops me off and I hit the tot lot first, thinking that was best as no kids were there. I worked the front half, then went to that back half and started swinging... No junk, no coins, no foil, nothing! The lot is very small, maybe 60 ft square. I started swinging near a spring toy and got a hit in the nickel range.. 2 inches down in the sand, my probe goes off.. I start digging away at the sand and soon A SHINY GOLD RING!! "Now dont get too excited, it is probably junk".. Thought I could see a mark, but two of the "diamonds" were missing, so I didnt get my hopes up.. Went on about another 3 or 4 ft and get a foil signal of 6 and 4 inches down.. Almost didnt dig it, but glad I did.. Nice GOLD earring! That was it for the tot lot, so went down to the beach. Worked it for almost 4 hours and you can see from the pic that it was really slim... One sterling bangle bracelet, 3 pennies, and 3 dimes...
Got home and sure enough, the ring is a mans, positive for 14k, and the earring is 10k..
Just before I left, an old man approached me and as we were talking, he told me that the beach is not really old, maybe 20 yrs. "Now on the other side of the pier, THAT was the bathing beach when I was young, in the 30's and 40's... He said another old fellow had found quite a few old silver coins in that area!!
I will have to hit that area hard next time I go there.. I have yet to dig a silver half or dollar, and I am hungry for a morgan, walker, or any of those nice old silver coins...
Happy hunting all!
