Not any tool I've ever seen...

I found this little thing a couple years ago and just rediscovered it today. It has always been a mystery to me. It is about 3.25 inches long with a mouth that is about .75 inches across when closed and twice as large when open. Thanks!

Update:

I look on google, but I don't think they can be hog ring pliers because:
1) the handle is far too small to bend wire
2) I see no "groove" in order to hold the wire
3)It doesn't appear to me that it would be able to fully close a hog ring, look at the first picture when it is fully closed

Re: Not any tool I've ever seen...

It's made for placing a very stiff rubber band around a food animal's testes, causing them to fall off eventually. It is easier than trying to castrate a 500 lb potential steer. Dad bought a small bull calf and raised a beef every year and that's very much like the tool he used. Monty

If this is correct Jim, it is a very good ID

I searched many antique wrenches/pliers and couldn't come up with a match.

I am hesitant to ask what they are called.
"Blue Nut Pliers?" :laughing9:

Its not a testicle bander. The bands would never stay on a piece like that. I've probably done a 1000 bandings if I've done one, they are not it.

The words "hog nose pliers" may be the sticky point. There are other items that are used - for other things, that use the same type of pliers (with varying length - which are called hog-nosed pliers, even though they are not actually used for the animal-hog. They are used for putting what is called a "hog-ring" on clothing, and the like. (sometimes called snub-nosed pliers) They are used for squeezing all different types of round rings or triangular rings, and they are quite often used in the auto industry.

When you castrate, you have to have a way to place the rings (elastic bands) close to the body, so it doesn't castrate other surrounding parts. And crusher pliers are not an option either.

Modify - What you are talking about is called an elastrator - they need to have something to put the rubber bands on.
