Looks like you found the female side of a "sex bolt". does it have a screwdriver slot in it? what caliber is the casing?

screwdriver slot? Not sure on the casing but its fairly large....it says t w 5 4 on the top
 

That whatsit looks kinda' like a thimble. That w 54 probably means manufactured by Winchester in 1954, would denote a military surplus cartridge probably JIM.
 

I know that pic kinda looks like a thimble but it isnt :-\ Wish it was though :D I think its prolly some kind of connector for water, gas, or electricity or something....you are probably right about the shell, i have found alot of surplus and winchester ammo out here so it would fit...
