I've recently returned to my home area of Alabama. My 10 year old became interested in history while we were living in Oklahoma. We are looking for leads or rumors that can lead us to treasures mostly of historic value. We have checked local libraries and the internet. Unfortunately there is little info on 'undiscovered' treasures. Any help you could give us would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the buried treasure stories are just fanciful legends. Or, if they are based on fact, are so embelished, and so vague that they are un-findable. Most of the caches/treasures that are found, are of the nature of "bread & butter" caches. Like a jar of coins cached during the depression, found .... not by specific leads, but just by someone detecting and digging a big signal :)

As for general nostalgia, with interesting historical ties, I find hunting old-town urban demolition projects to be the most fun. Like, you hit a place where a saloon used to stand, and find lots of the lead twistie/tie things that were on the top of beer bottles. Or a China-town site, you find chinese coins, opium bottles, etc.... Or a blacksmith shop site yeilds lots of iron workings, etc... All sort of paints a mental picture that lends to "historic value" (And who says we md'rs aren't skilled archaeologists, eh? hahaha)

Start off my going to the local historical society. They have tons of info about your area and old maps to find out where some of the old schools used to be.

Another place to hit is the local library. I have found old newspaper articles and maps that have been helpful.

Captain Wolfe, where are you located? I live about 10 miles west of Florence in Lauderdale county.
