Funny notice from the ambulance corps, they are exaggerating a little bit here. When I was a teenager we would take 2 L bottles out of recycling bins then head to Walmart and get aluminum foil and toilet bowl cleaner. We would then go to our paintball grounds pretty far in the woods (or sometimes a friends backyard) to set 'em off. we would roll up the aluminum foil into small beads and cover the bottom of the 2L, then pour in some toilet bowl cleaner to cover the aluminum and then cap it. The reaction between the toilet bowl cleaner and the aluminum produced a gas, which caused the 2L to swell huge until it burst open, causing a very loud "BANG!".
First of all, the reaction happens as soon as the cleaner and AL are put into the 2L, and lasts about 30 seconds before the bottle pops. To make one that only reacted when someone picked it up would mean that you would have to put a plastic shelf of some sort in the 2L and balance the AL precariously on it, which would fall to the cleaner at the bottom when jostled. I highly doubt anyone did this. Secondly, there is no explosion, so even snopes is wrong on that. The bottle essentially tears apart at it's weakest point due to being inflated beyond the breaking point by the gas. I think the biggest concern with this is the left over cleaner. Honestly though, as a chemist, I see no way that either the gas or liquid left behind would be 'toxic.' It is probably a simple metal catalyzed reaction of the ammonia in cleaning agents to N2 gas, the most common gas in the atmosphere (about 70%).
I could be wrong of course. Just thought i would elaborate because I remember making these (not for purposes of harm, just to see the bottle pop and make the noise) when I was a kid
HH this weekend!
