We were hoping we’d escape forest fires here in Northern California, but recent lightning has started quite a few in recent days. Below is a fire a short ways from home in one of the most pristine areas of the country, along the Smith River In Del Norte County. Our neighbors over the hills to the east in Siskiyou County have numerous blazes going as well.

Highway 199 and 96 are closed to through traffic.

Be safe. May God be with you.

Wow. We've lucked out fire-wise here (so far). You guys take care and never under estimate how fast one of those fires can move.

There is a growing forest fire burning just about 30 miles east of our place. It too was started by lightning, back on July 29th. It's called the "Sourdough Fire", and it's burning in heavily wooded and very steep terrain.

Here is a link to the NW Fire Map:

Well the fires here are still spreading. Highway 199 is still closed and the power company just turned off the power to the entire county. Main lines from Oregon are in jeopardy from the fires. Not sure of the time frame but could days.

More info.

Thanks OV and all. We are still without power in all of Del Norte County. Makes it hard as we in the rural areas have wells and it takes a larger generator to run than I have. My Honda 2000 keeps the fridge and freezer good.

The main highway from Oregon is still closed and it looks like the fires have gotten the only power lines into the county. These line are in very remote and rugged country.

There are many fires throughout this and we'll as surrounding counties with another large one to the north of us along the Rogue River in Oregon.
