its about 2 times as heavy as a typical rock of the same size and seems to be really hard(drove a nail with it and didn't mark it)

Where did you find it? It looks like iron slag.

I'm sure one of the "rock guys" will chime in on this one.

space peanuts?

This could be several different things. But before I start guessing, are you sure that a magnet doesn't even slightly pull towards it? There are chemical tests that can be conducted also. Try dragging it on a piece of paper to see if it leaves a mark. Then post the mark on here.
Don't let NASA find out about it. ("snicker, snicker")
You said you found it on a beach, what state? Florida, Hawaii?

the pictures i have about the best quality i can get out of my camera. the outer layer is smooth (but it came from a beach) seems to be very thin. the inside is very reflective.

take it to a rock shop and have them look at it

It's kinda hard to tell from your pic's but I'm thinking some type of pyrite or zinc by the look of the fracture that you made in it? HH

Either a non metallic meteorite or a hunk of hematite that is non magnetic. Both exist.

My first thought is hematite but you need to do a good streak test to be sure.

Do a streak test on the underside of your toilet tank lid. (easiest place to find non glazed ceramic)
If it streaks reddish or brownish --- hematite.
If it streaks grey/silver or blackish --- magnetite

If the rock effects a compass needle --- magnetite.

I'm not a rock guru but that is my two cents worth anyway...
