I wanted to make a floating sifter that you could pass your detector over without it going off unless you scooped up something metal. I've noticed guys scooping in the surf, rechecking the hole and if they still have a signal they just empty the scoop and scoop up more. Who's to say there wasn't a target in the scoop? I've found more than one target clumped together, especially in the water. I made this one so it all snaps apart for cleaning. Ideally I would like to use an inner tube but I can't find one with a plastic valve. Ever heard of one? I tested this one in my bathtub and you can put a lot of weight in it and it still floats.I designed it so the part with the holes sits about an inch below the surface of the water. The Lexan disc is completely unbreakable, you can smash your scoop on it and not harm it. The styrofoam tire spacer I found on eBay. I work at a glass co. so the Lexan was free. Total cost: $20. Looking forward to your input...Rich.

Looks like it should work. How long will the styrofoam last? Thinking about making something for when I go creek searching this summer.

The dirt people say it will last millions of years. Not sure where they get their statistics from though. Must be the same place they got the global warming stuff.

Rich,

I wanted a non metalic sifter also because I wanted to use a vibra probe to find small targets. But mostly I wanted it to float my scoop on when not in use. So I made a sifter that will float a load! It will actually float several scoops of bottom, my scoop, my detector, my vibra probe and me!

Steve :-)

How about using a child's play tube, without the metal valve stem. Maybe not as durable as an inertube, but would last a while, anyway.

:icon_pirat: pirates think Life ring. As in PFD on our boats or on a dock. No metal parts of any kind, never goes flat and is available in many sizes. I've got 2 of them. :laughing9:

Use a swimming pool noodle - $2.00 at the dollar store, easy to replace with tie wraps and floats a Garrett 14" sifter/classifier.

Yes, I was also going to suggest noodles. They make a large size also. Just wrap it, tie wrap it down and cut to length. Yes, it is nice to have it all plastc, so you can pass the detector over and see if its in there. They do last for years, and are cheap to buy. Then for the center get a large round plastic pan or square, something like that. Then drill it or just burn the holes with a wood burning tool, or solder iron.
