Do you think the hole in the bottom is a drain hole? Grooves in the wood might let liquid get to the hole.

The bottom piece looks like it was cut from something else and used to make this item. Home made?

What's it made of? What else did you find with it?

yeah I was thinking home made...made of copper, it does seem to have purpose for draining. found it in the woods near by was a dump. found an old paper shotgun shell casing about a foot away. could be the end of an axe or something maybe, not sure. thanks for your ideas guys

Looks like a homemade worm tin for fishin'. The wood would be wet as would the soil (if any) placed on top of the worms - keeps 'em cool and alive for a long while. Have seen a few - mainly used by the old timers...

The hole in the bottom would have let any excess water drain and there would have been a lid as well...
