From what I can see it does appear to be quite early. The hole appears to be tapered with corresponds with attaching to wood or a gun part. The hole doesn't appear to be perfectly round which means it wasn't drilled but rather cast into. When it was removed from the cast it would have had a web that would have been knocked out leaving the "not perfect" hole. Other than that info, I have no idea what it is.

Agreed with the above, it looks a early (in your terms, so PBK does jump in and think I mean Roman) & I would guess by the patina - Brass. So a 'early brass fitting', but to what??
