No Idea, silver plated....

Hi all, found this on a site where colonial to modern items were found. The whole thing was silver plated, but very little remains. On the bottom, you see the portion that has ALL of the plating. When I recovered this, that piece was insertd into a tube that ALSO was silver plated, which protected the plating on the end. The tube crumbled in my pouch, so this is all that is left. The tube that crumbled was about 1.5 inches long and was also broken near the end.

Any ideas?

The knurling indicates that it may have been turned and the knurling would provide grip. Since it may have been silver plated, it could be from a number of things. My guess it is the top part of a valve of some sort for a gas lamp or something similar. Just my guess.

You said there was a crumbling tube by it....my guess is an early mechanical pencil. Twisting the knurled part advanced the lead out of the pencil.

I think Matt hit it on this one. I found one a few years back at a Victorian era amusement park. The top portion is a screw on lid and there is a dabber inside.

Here is a top view of the one I found. I noticed the remaining gem only after cleaning it. I have more photos somewhere, and if you can search back a few years in this forum, I posted it in "What is it".
