can you see any Markings on the insid Piston ?

Could it be a tire Guage ?

In the first couple of images, the bottom has a nerl around it. So do you think whatever this went to it would be twisted. :dontknow:

I agree that it looks like part of a mechanical pencil and from the markings I think it is civil war or earlier.

Resembles a black powder measuring device. Most powder measure were custom made to match the firearm. To find what the firearm liked to eat, one would test different measures. The link shows some. The the tube moves in and out to increase, or decrease volume. You really don't need marks to indicate grains. Once you established the volume you would use that to carve out a permanent measure in something like a horn tip. My guess.

Disagree. 1/3 the width of a dime would be impractically small for a powder measure.

Grease pencil barrel would be my guess (used for marking glassware & metal, etc.).

Excuse me! I stand corrected, well actually I'm sitting, but corrected no the less. After taking a better look I think I am rong. There I said it, or typed it.

Yes, similar to what Jeff's diagram depicts. Yours could be even earlier. I've seen a few examples closely resembling yours in a friend's CW collection.
